South Slave Research Centre

The South Slave Research Centre (SSRC) is situated at the Thebacha Campus of Aurora College, on the traditional territory of Tthebatthıe Dënésułıné Nation, Salt River First Nation, and Fort Smith Métis Council. SSRC was established in 1991 to support research and community engagement in the South Slave region. We are a small but passionate team that believes we can increase our collective capacity through collaborative research. We are working with local Indigenous governments to build capacity to carry out more research locally. We also rely on partnerships and collaboration with researchers from southern Canada who share our commitment to making a difference and who are willing to help us build our programs.

Be sure to check out our twice-annual newsletter – they provide a great overview of our projects, as well as the work of community organizations and other researchers working in the region.

Our STEM Outreach team provides hands-on classroom learning, STEM kits, and professional development for teachers with a goal of fostering interest and education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

We are able to support visiting researchers with housing, lab bench space, and office space with high-speed wireless internet.  Our fee structure for these support services is available on our Logistics Support Page.  Please reach out early to discuss your visit!

We respectfully acknowledge that the Aurora Research Institute is situated on the traditional territories and homeland of the Dene, Inuvialuit, Métis and Cree peoples of the Northwest Territories. We are grateful to the many Indigenous peoples of the NWT for allowing us the opportunity to learn, work and live on their lands. We are also deeply grateful for the generous sharing of Indigenous Knowledge, wisdom and ways of knowing, being, doing and believing with our students and employees.
