Using Drones to Map Snow

May 14, 2018

Thursday, May 17 at 6 pm, come to ARI for a research talk by Branden Walker, who uses drones to map snow, and looks at how the changes in local vegetation cover may impact our spring runoff and stream systems.

Branden explains further:

“Increasing shrub cover into tundra regions has resulted in a changing end-of-winter snowpack where snow drifts store a large portion of the water available as snow.  Uneven distributions of snow across the landscape make predicting the snowmelt runoff timing and quantity difficult. My research addresses this by using drones to map snow cover properties to better measure the amount of snow on the ground available to the stream to understand the implications on the stream system.”

Branden WalkerThe timing of this talk couldn’t be better as we jump into spring, and we hope you will join us. There will be snacks and door prizes, and everyone is welcome!
