The journal focuses on decolonizing knowledge by combining scholarly articles with storytelling, art, and more. Aurora College is hosting a series of Research Data Management (RDM) workshops across the Northwest Territories in October 2024, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. The workshops in Fort Smith, Inuvik, and Yellowknife will offer hands-on training to improve RDM skills among researchers, students, and the public. Each two-day event will include introductory sessions followed by practical exercises. In November, a virtual RDM Speaker Series will extend this training, making it accessible to the wider research community. Early registration is encouraged.

Aurora College’s Research Chair for Climate Change Adaptation, Dr. Garfield Giff, has been appointed to the Council of Canadian Academies’ expert panel on dual-use research of concern (DURC). The panel will address the potential misuse of research for malicious purposes, developing strategies to manage DURC while promoting open science in Canada. Dr. Giff’s expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing, particularly in extreme Arctic conditions, highlights his significant contributions to climate change adaptation and research security. This appointment underscores his role in addressing critical issues facing Northern communities and advancing innovative solutions.

Aurora College’s Aurora Research Institute (ARI) has been awarded $347,683 by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for two innovative projects. Dr. Garfield Giff's project will use Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems to measure methane emissions in the Western Arctic, enhancing climate change data accuracy. Jennifer Rafferty's initiative will expand the Northwest Territories Makerspace Ecosystem, providing micro-manufacturing equipment and training to foster local creativity and small business development. These grants highlight ARI's commitment to addressing environmental challenges and supporting community innovation in the Northwest Territories.

Aurora College's Xàgots’eèhk’ǫ̀ Journal seeks members for its Editorial Advisory Board. The biannual journal integrates peer-reviewed articles with storytelling and art to foster Northern knowledge. Board members guide the journal, serve as reviewers, and support a decolonized review process. Diverse applicants, including Indigenous, racialized, disabled, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities, are encouraged to apply by June 14, 2024.

Aurora College, Hotıì ts’eeda, and the Institute of Circumpolar Health Research (ICHR) have secured $962,900 from the Research Support Fund (RSF) for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. This funding will enhance research infrastructure, administrative support, and community engagement, benefiting Northern Canada.

Aurora College's Aurora Research Institute has received $602,500 from the Suncor Energy Foundation to enhance its STEM Outreach Team for the next four years. This funding will improve STEM education for youth in the Northwest Territories, focusing on small communities. In the past year, the outreach team engaged over 8,500 students through 450 events and launched a teacher training program with specialized loaner kits.
