An innovative partnership between Aurora College and a Gwich’in-owned company has received $95,000 to support studying the potential to convert waste cardboard into heating pellets for homes and businesses in Inuvik and the Beaufort Delta.

Aurora Research Institute, Aurora College’s research division, and Delta Enterprises were awarded the Northern REACHE (Northern Responsible Energy Approach for Community Health and Electricity) grant through Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC).

Phase 1 of Research CA$H gives participants an overview of research basics and an understanding of how research is funded in Canada.

The Yellowknife Garden Metals Study (YKGMS) collects information on the amount of arsenic and other mining related contaminants (antimony, cadmium, lead, manganese, copper, zinc, and vanadium) in backyard garden soils and produce in Yellowknife (YK), Ndilo, Dettah and surrounding area.   The research team is asking for samples of locally grown produce and soil for analysis.  Participants who submit locally grown produce and soil to the study will receive their individual results and interpretation of what those numbers mean.

Earlier this year, The Aurora Research Institute (ARI), the research division of Aurora College, along with Hotıì ts’eeda: NWT SPOR SUPPORT Unit, collaborated to host a grant writing workshop: Research CASH (Capacity, Access, and Strength Here).

The workshop will guide participants through the development of a high quality, submission-ready research funding proposal to one of the Tri-Council agencies (SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC). The purpose of this workshop is to build Northern research capacity and increase NWT access to federal research funding programs. 

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and physical-distancing precautions, the workshop will now be offered virtually!
