50th Anniversary Schedule of Events

Event and Details

North Slave Science Showcase: November 3rd, 9:30a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Northern United Place Auditorium (5004 – 54th Street, Yellowknife)

Result posters by researchers that have been working in the North Slave region will be displayed and open for the public to browse.  A set of six talks will be given by of regional researchers covering a wide range of topics starting at 11 AM.  A complete list of talks will be available at nwtresearch.com. 

Movie Night: November 4th, 7 p.m.
Western Arctic Research Centre (ARI, Inuvik)

Our final movie night of the series! The Great Adventure is about a science expedition aboard a three-mast sailing vessel which travels from Montreal to Vancouver, via the Northwest Passage, exploring the effect of climate change along the way.

Robotics Demonstration For Youth: November 6th, 4 p.m.
Inuvik Youth Centre

ARI staff and the Inuvik Robotics Club have been hard at work. Now is their chance to show off what they’ve built and what they’ve learned along the way.

Research Presentation: November 10th, 4-5 p.m.

Linguistics researcher Signe Rix Berthelin is studying the Uummarmiutun dialect of Inuvialuktun with Elders. Come hear her share some of their findings concerning how to say ’must’, ’might’ and ’can’ in Uummarmiutun – and see why English translations are not enough.

Robotics Challenge: November 16th, 1:30-5 p.m.

ARI Staff and the Inuvik Robotics Club are challenging the public to a robotics competition! Come out and build your own robot (equipment provided), then put it to the test!

Come see our beautiful research facility, try your hand at interactive science demonstrations,  have a snack, take a tour, learn what happens at the research centre, and enjoy two excellent speakers discuss the history of research in the region.

As part of our open house, John England will offer a look back on 50 years of research in the Inuvik region. John is Professor Emeritus for the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta and has been actively engaged in arctic research since 1965.

As part of our open house, Alestine Andre from the Gwich’in Social and Cultural Institute will reflect on 20 years of oral history research with Gwich’in Elders.

Brenda Parlee has spent many years exploring what kinds of knowledge, practices and institutions are important to the resilience of northern communities to ecological change. She will share some of her research and findings at this lunchtime talk.

50th Anniversary Celebration and Community Dinner: November 19th, 6 p.m.

The public is invited to join the Aurora Research Institute in commemorating 50 years of research in the Inuvik region!
