Our next speaker series, Thursday February 15th 2024 at 7PM-8PM, Aurora Research Institute (Inuvik), 191 Mackenzie Road:

The ARI's speaker series aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and the local communities in the Northwest Territories. By inviting experts from various fields, including climate science, ecology, anthropology, and traditional Indigenous knowledge, the ARI speaker series provides a diverse range of perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the North.

The Speaker Series: Bridging the Gap

One of the ARI's most popular initiatives is the annual speaker series, especially in the summer months, which serves as a platform for researchers, experts, and community members to engage in meaningful discussions about the latest scientific developments and their implications for the NWT. Presented in plain language, our speaker series welcomes everyone, ensuring that you don't need to be a scientist to join and learn more about local research!

Each year, the speaker series covers a variety of topics that resonate with the interests and concerns of the region, such as:

  • Climate Change: Researchers and experts discuss the latest climate science findings, as well as strategies for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change in the NWT.
  • Wildlife and Ecosystem Conservation: Presentations focus on the rich biodiversity of the North, exploring the unique flora and fauna, and addressing conservation challenges in the face of rapid environmental change.
  • Indigenous Knowledge and Culture: The speaker series highlights the importance of Indigenous perspectives, showcasing how traditional knowledge can be integrated with scientific research to better understand and protect the region.
  • Resource Management and Sustainable Development: Experts delve into the complex issues surrounding the responsible management of the North's abundant natural resources, including water, minerals, and energy sources.

Building Connections and Fostering Collaboration

The ARI's speaker series is more than just an opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research; it is also a platform for fostering collaboration between scientists, Indigenous communities, policymakers, and the general public. By creating a space for dialogue and exchange, the ARI helps to build partnerships that can drive innovative solutions to the challenges facing the North.

In addition, the speaker series also inspires the next generation of Northern researchers by showcasing the exciting and diverse career opportunities available in scientific research and environmental management.

Virtual Speaker Series (Zoom)

In 2020, the ARI speaker series transitioned to virtual delivery. Upcoming virtual speaker series events are advertised through our Facebook page. Moving forward, the majority of our speaker series will be done in person, however, we will continue to employ virtual delivery as needed (i.e. when presenters are physically distant from each other or out of the territory).

Check the ARI Facebook page for a listing of topics, dates, and times.
