Aurora College Research Ethics Committee

All research in the Northwest Territories must be licensed through the Aurora Research Institute's licensing process. For any research involving human participants, the licensing process requires an ethical review and approval from an institutional research ethics board. The Aurora College Research Ethics Committee (REC) is responsible for reviewing applications from Aurora College staff as well as applications from external researchers who do not have access to an institutional ethics review.

The REC meets monthly between September and June to review applications. In order to be considered, applicants must submit their application form a minimum of ten business days before the next scheduled meeting. Please submit completed forms to chairrec@auroracollege.nt.ca before the monthly due date. The research ethics office will complete a primary review of all submissions for completion and accuracy, then contact the principal investigator with any critical revisions or concerns. It is strongly recommended that applicants with minimal research ethics experience seek assistance from the research ethics office for guidance well in advance of the submission deadline. All principal investigators are offered the opportunity to present their submission to the REC at the corresponding monthly review meeting. This is not mandatory, however it is strongly encouraged in order to help the committee understand the study under review and reduce the time required to respond to committee members' questions. It offers the researcher the opportunity to clarify any questions in real-time, rather than waiting for an official communication from the REC after the review and vote have been completed. Applicants will receive the REC's review decision up to ten days after the review meeting.

The REC may require revisions and addendums to your original submission. If extensive revisions are required, the applicant may need to submit the requested changes for the next available REC meeting. Please plan well ahead for your ethics review - this process can take up to eight weeks or more, depending on the project, ethical concerns and applicant's ability to address the committee's concerns.

**Please note: in the 2017-2018 year, the REC requires applicants to submit applications a minimum ten working days in advance of the REC meeting, as per the schedule below.
